Film Codes and Genre Conventions Preliminary Exercise 1

Symbolic Codes Closed Reading of VALERIAN Official Trailer # 1 (2017):

Symbolic codes are the visual elements that connote meaning in a media production. They are the Mise En Scene of films. They include setting, location, costumes, acting, hair and make-up, and tone. Film producers use these codes to add depth and meaning to media products. These codes can be interpreted differently by the audience based to their social and cultural influences.

The 2017 film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is a Science Fiction (Sci-Fi) movie. We can determine this with the advanced technology and alien creatures shown in the trailer. The movie is set in space on a planet, like another dimension. We can see this when they show us the galaxy and Earth. The color lighting is very bright and vibrant. A lot of blue LED lighting which gives it a futuristic feel. The costumes are basically space shield outfits and armor since they are in space. Also the hair and make-up factor is basically the aliens and the characters as just one colored creatures. The props are space crafts and advanced weapons that shoot with colors.
