Setting, Set Design, and Props Preliminary Exercise 3 - Production Design
Production design is the overall look of the production. The props and sets can tell you what's going on as an audience member. It captures the unifying image of wardrobe, props, and set design. It has three main factors. It sets a scene's mood, can reflect the state of a character, and can articulate a stories themes. Production designers and sometimes producers are responsible for production design. They work together, also writers to understand the mood, props, and wardrobe in that one scene.
A films setting functions as a backdrop and container for action taking place in the scene. However it goes further then that. Its significance comes from the fact that it can reflect the themes and mood, style, and emotions of a film. Also indicating the historical and geographic context of the production. One key element in identifying genre is the mood of the film. If the film is upbeat it might be and action or comedy. If its calm and reserved it might be a drama.
