Research - The Giver

 In the opening film of the giver the narration of the main character Jonas takes us through a journey through the opening scene. Starting at the establishing shot and going through the scenes he narrates and talks about his life and the world that he lives in. The wonderful things about the world and the not so wonderful things. He realizes that however he is different from everyone else and his friends who are supposed to be living basically the same lives.

I learned and was able to establish what an establishing shot looks like. The cutting of shots with the different elements of Mise en scene really being emphasized. With their costumes in this world everyone wears the same shirt and pants. The editing of this opening scene shows a black and white world with the lighting being soft. Overall a very helpful example about opening scenes in films.

These codes can be interpreted differently by the audience based to their social and cultural influences.  The 2017 film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is a Science Fiction (Sci-Fi) movie. We can determine this with the advanced technology and alien creatures shown in the trailer. The movie is set in space on a planet, like another dimension.
